Meet our Team

All of the Academy’s coaches are trained and experienced professionals who demonstrate the highest level of competence whilst on the beach.

The Academy requires comprehensive induction training of all of its coaches, to cover its unique and most effective methods in learning to surf in which we teach.

Above all this, all coaching staff are fully updated and qualified in the following:

  • Senior First Aid certification
  • CPR & Advanced Resuscitation training
  • Board rescue skills
  • Level 1 & 2 Surf Coaching certificates with Surfing Australia
  • Child Protection Blue Cards for coaching students under 18 years of age

All staff are trained to think, act and feel in a motivated way.


Johnny Preston

The Academy was founded by Johnny Preston, who is now internationally recognized throughout the world, from the people he has given immense encouragement, praise and support with his teachings in surfing and life skills in general. He believes that riding a wave is one of life's many gifts that can be enjoyed by people of most ages.

He travels frequently to Indonesia for Rip Curl and conducts training camps for the Junior National team now competing around the world. His qualifications have a broad benefit for all areas of surfing from beginner to intermediate and high performance.

His qualifications are 2nd to none, he currently holds:

  • Level 4 in fitness instructing and strength
  • Level 1 Boxing coach
  • Surfing Australia Level 2 coach
  • Level 2 Surf life Saving coach

His new and exciting skills and syllabus been implemented on a intermediate level for the Rip Curl School of surf in Legian beach Bali with continuous yearly improvement.

The Academy has junior trainee coaches doing government apprenticeships that follow through and become well trained in the continuing developing syllabus.
